Wardrobe Tips for Senior Portraits
Senior portraits are more than just photos; they’re a celebration of who you are at this milestone moment in your life. Whether you’re bold and adventurous, classic and refined, or somewhere in between, your wardrobe is a key part of telling your story. That’s why my advice for senior sessions always starts with one simple mantra: "You be you." Here are some tips to help you choose outfits that reflect your personality and make your senior portraits shine.
1. Dress for Your Personality
Your senior portraits should feel authentically you. If you’re most comfortable in jeans and a tee, don’t feel pressured to go over the top with formal wear. On the other hand, if you love dressing up, go all out! The key is to wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable, because when you feel great, it shows in the photos.
2. Choose a Variety of Outfits
To create a gallery with variety, I recommend bringing 2-3 outfits that showcase different aspects of your personality. For example:
Casual: Think cozy sweaters, distressed jeans, or a fun graphic tee that shows off your laid-back vibe.
Dressy: Consider a sharp suit, a flowy dress, or a chic jumpsuit for a more polished look.
Personalized: Incorporate items that reflect your hobbies, interests, or school pride, like a jersey, band uniform, or favorite hat.
3. Stick to Solid Colors and Simple Patterns
When it comes to photographs, solid colors often work best because they don’t compete with your surroundings. Earth tones, jewel tones, and classic neutrals are always flattering. If you want to include patterns, opt for subtle ones, like small florals or thin stripes, and avoid anything too busy or distracting.
4. Add Layers and Accessories
Layers like jackets, cardigans, or scarves can add depth and texture to your photos. Accessories, such as a statement necklace, hat, or watch, can provide a unique touch. Just be mindful not to overdo it—the focus should stay on you, not your accessories.
5. Think About Your Location
Your wardrobe should complement your chosen photo location. For instance:
At a park or nature spot, earthy tones and flowy fabrics can work beautifully.
In an urban setting, sleek, modern outfits with bold colors or edgy details will stand out.
For a classic studio session, timeless, simple outfits like a solid blouse or tailored blazer are ideal.
6. Don’t Forget About Shoes
Shoes are an often-overlooked part of the outfit, but they’ll likely make an appearance in your photos! Choose footwear that coordinates with your outfit and location. For outdoor shoots, avoid heels or shoes that might sink into grass or dirt.
7. Pay Attention to Grooming
Make sure your grooming matches the effort you’ve put into your wardrobe. Get a haircut a week or two before your session, and if you wear makeup, aim for a natural look that enhances your features.
8. Bring Options and Stay Flexible
Sometimes, an outfit you love might not photograph the way you expect. Bring extra pieces so we can adjust as needed. During the session, I’ll guide you on how to tweak your look for the best results.
9. Confidence is Key
The most important thing to wear is confidence. When you’re comfortable and true to yourself, it will come through in every shot. My goal is to create a relaxed and fun environment so you can truly be you.
